Container
handling at Faroe Ship is booming
At the harbour
in Hirtshals, Denmark a new Linde C4230 Reachstacker takes the heavy
tow for Faroe Ship, handling containers up to 42 tonnes every day.
The Reachstacker has made container handling both faster and easier
at Hirtshals, enabling the harbour to be much more productive.
"In the
stevedore department at Faroe Ship we mainly work with loading and
unloading ships, approximately 200 containers per week. We mainly
handle fresh and frozen fish-products and shellfish from The Faroe
Islands, Norway and Canada." says the Stevedore foreman Bjarne
Niebuhr.
The Linde Reachstacker
has greatly improved the efficiency and the range of container handling
at Faroe Ship. The Reachstacker is able to work containers in second
and third row. This comes in very handy when the container handler
is used to stack containers directly onboard a ship. Compared to
a mast truck, which Faroe Ship has previously used, the Reachstacker
is superior in every field, especially vision and handling.
Bjarne Niebuhr
emphasises another great advantage with the Linde Reachstacker.
"Due to the way it is constructed, the weight of the load is
evenly distributed on the entire vehicle, thus minimising the wear
on the surface of the quay."
Faroe Ship has
also discovered another use for the Linde Reachstacker. Along with
the container handling it also functions as a general-purpose handler.
"In some situations we use the reachstacker to handle non-containerised
loads. For instance, when we handle other types of heavy goods,
equipped with a lifting device." says Bjarne Niebuhr.
